Introducción
1.

En Sevilla, en el mismo atrio de Santa Inés, y mientras esperaba que comenzase la Misa del Gallo, oí esta tradición a una demandadera del convento.

In Seville, in the very portico of Santa Ines, and while, on Christmas Eve, I was waiting for the Midnight Mass to begin, I heard this tradition from a lay-sister of the convent.

Como era natural, después de oírla, aguardé impaciente que comenzara la ceremonia, ansioso de asistir a un prodigio.

As was natural, after hearing it, I waited impatiently for the ceremony to commence, eager to be present at a miracle.

Nada menos prodigioso, sin embargo, que el órgano de Santa Inés, ni nada más vulgar que los insulsos motetes que nos regaló su organista aquella noche.

Nothing could be less miraculous, however, than the organ of Santa Ines, and nothing more vulgar than the insipid motets with which that night the organist regaled us.

Al salir de la misa, no pude por menos de decirle a la demandadera con aire de burla:

On going out from the mass, I could not resist asking the lay-sister mischievously:

-¿En qué consiste que el órgano de maese Pérez suena ahora tan mal?

" How does it happen that the organ of Master Perez is so unmusical at present?"

-¡Toma! -me contestó la vieja-. En que éste no es el suyo.

" Why! " replied the old woman." Because it isn't his."

-¿No es el suyo? ¿Pues qué ha sido de él?

" Not his? What has become of it?"

-Se cayó a pedazos, de puro viejo, hace una porción de años.

" It fell to pieces from sheer old age, a number of years ago." 

9.

-¿Y el alma del organista?

" And the soul of the organist?" 

10.

-No ha vuelto a parecer desde que colocaron el que ahora le substituye.

" It has not appeared again since the new organ was set up in place of his own."

Si a alguno de mis lectores se les ocurriese hacerme la misma pregunta después de leer esta historia ya sabe por qué no se ha continuado el milagroso portento hasta nuestros días.

If anyone of my readers, after perusing this history, should be moved to ask the same question, now he knows why the notable miracle has not continued into our own time.
