Madre, ha llegado la hora de que me vaya. Me voy.

It is time for me to go, mother; I am going.

Cuando la oscuridad palidezca y dé paso al alba solitaria, cuando desde tu lecho tenderás los brazos hacia tu hijo, yo te diré: "El niño ya no está". Me voy, madre.

When in the paling darkness of the lonely dawn you stretch out your arms for your baby in the bed, I shall say, "Baby is not there!"--mother, I am going.

Me convertiré en un leve soplo de aire y te acariciaré; cuando te bañes, seré las pequeñas ondas del agua y te cubriré incesantemente de besos.

I shall become a delicate draught of air and caress you; and I shall be ripples in the water when you bathe, and kiss you and kiss you again.

Cuando, en las noches de tormenta, la lluvia susurrará sobre las hojas, oirás mis murmullos desde tu lecho, y de pronto, con el relámpago, mi risa cruzará tu ventana y estallará en tu estancia.

In the gusty night when the rain patters on the leaves you will hear my whisper in your bed, and my laughter will flash with the lightning through the open window into your room.

On the straying moonbeams I shall steal over your bed, and lie upon your bosom while you sleep.

Me convertiré en ensueño, y por la estrecha rendija de tus párpados descenderé hasta lo más profundo de tu reposo. Te despertarás sobresaltada y mientras mires a tu alrededor huiré en un momento, como una libélula.

I shall become a dream, and through the little opening of your eyelids I shall slip into the depths of your sleep; and when you wake up and look round startled, like a twinkling firefly I shall flit out into the darkness.

En la gran fiesta de Puja, cuando los niños de los vecinos vengan a jugar en nuestro jardín, yo me convertiré en la música de las flautas y palpitaré en tu corazón durante todo el día.

When, on the great festival of puja, the neighbours' children come and play about the house, I shall melt into the music of the flute and throb in your heart all day.

Llegará mi tía, cargada de regalos, y te preguntará: “Hermana, ¿dónde está el niño?” Y tú, madre, le contestarás dulcemente: “Está en las niñas de mis ojos, está en mi cuerpo, está en mi alma”.
