Madre, la luz palidece en el cielo gris. ¿Qué hora es? 

Mother, the light has grown grey in the sky; I do not know what the time is.

Ya me cansa el juego y vengo a tu lado. Es sábado, nuestro día de fiesta.

There is no fun in my play, so I have come to you. It is Saturday, our holiday.

Deja tu trabajo, madre, ven a sentarte a la ventana y dime dónde está el desierto de Tepantar de que habla el cuento.

Leave off your work, mother; sit here by the window and tell me where the desert of Tepântar in the fairy tale is?

La sombra de la lluvia ha cubierto el cielo de punta a punta. 

The shadow of the rains has covered the day from end to end.

El feroz relámpago desgarra las nubes con sus uñas.

The fierce lightning is scratching the sky with its nails.

Cuando las nubes truenan, ¡qué agradable es sentir cómo tiembla mi corazón y estrecharme contra ti! 

When the clouds rumble and it thunders, I love to be afraid in my heart and cling to you.

Cuando la lluvia pesada azota horas y horas las hojas del bambú, y nuestras ventanas gimen, sacudidas por el viento, ¡cómo me gusta sentarme a tu lado en la estancia, mientras me cuentas algo del desierto de Tepantar de que habla el cuento!

When the heavy rain patters for hours on the bamboo leaves, and our windows shake and rattle at the gusts of wind, I like to sit alone in the room, mother, with you, and hear you talk about the desert of Tepântar in the fairy tale.

¿Dónde está, madre? ¿En qué orilla de qué mar? ¿Al pie de qué montañas? ¿En el reino de qué rey? 

Where is it, mother, on the shore of what sea, at the foot of what hills, in the kingdom of what king?

Allí no habrá vallas entre los campos, ni en los prados habrá caminos para que, por la tarde, los campesinos regresen a su pueblo, y las recogedoras de leña vayan del bosque al mercado. Mucha arena, algunos matojos de hierba amarillenta, un solo árbol en el que anidan dos viejos pájaros astutos: esto es el desierto de Tepantar.

There are no hedges there to mark the fields, no footpath across it by which the villagers reach their village in the evening, or the woman who gathers dry sticks in the forest can bring her load to the market. With patches of yellow grass in the sand and only one tree where the pair of wise old birds have their nest, lies the desert of Tepântar.

Me imagino que un joven príncipe, montado en un caballo gris, cruza a solas el desierto en un día tan sombrío como hoy. Va en busca de la princesa que languidece en la cárcel del gigante, en la otra orilla de este mar desconocido.

I can imagine how, on just such a cloudy day, the young son of the king is riding alone on a grey horse through the desert, in search of the princess who lies imprisoned in the giant's palace across that unknown water.

Mientras la lluvia desciende como un telón y el relámpago salta como un hombre víctima de súbito dolor, ¿piensa el príncipe en su pobre madre abandonada por el rey, en su madre que limpia el establo y se seca las lágrimas de los ojos, mientras él cabalga por el desierto de Tepantar de que habla el cuento?

When the haze of the rain comes down in the distant sky, and lightning starts up like a sudden fit of pain, does he remember his unhappy mother, abandoned by the king, sweeping the cow-stall and wiping her eyes, while he rides through the desert of Tepântar in the fairy tale?

Mira, madre, todavía es de día, pero hay la oscuridad de la noche; nadie anda por el camino de la aldea.

See, mother, it is almost dark before the day is over, and there are no travellers yonder on the village road.

El pastorcillo volvió muy pronto de los pastos, y los hombres dejaron los campos: sentados en las esteras de sus chozas, contemplan las nubes amenazadoras.

The shepherd boy has gone home early from the pasture, and men have left their fields to sit on mats under the eaves of their huts, watching the scowling clouds.

Mamá: he guardado mis libros en el estante. Te lo ruego, no me pidas hoy que estudie.

Mother, I have left all my books on the shelf--do not ask me to do my lessons now.

Cuando sea mayor como mi padre, ya aprenderé todo lo que hay que saber.

When I grow up and am big like my father, I shall learn all that must be learnt.
