-¡Coketown! -dijo el revisor con voz monótona, caminando por el vagón a punto de pararse.

"Coketown!" droned the porter, making his way through the slowing car.

Pescud cogió su sombrero y el equipaje, con la despreocupada prontitud del viajero experto.

Pescud gathered his hat and baggage with the leisurely promptness of an old traveller.

-Me casé con ella hace un año -explicó John-. Ya te he dicho que mandé construir una casa en el East End. El noble condecorado, quiero decir el coronel, está también allí con nosotros. Me lo encuentro esperándome ante la puerta cada vez que vuelvo de un viaje, dispuesto a escuchar cualquier historia nueva que haya podido recoger por el camino.

"I married her a year ago," said John. "I told you I built a house in the East End. The belted--I mean the colonel--is there, too. I find him waiting at the gate whenever I get back from a trip to hear any new story I might have picked up on the road."

Miré por la ventana. Coketown no era más que una loma accidentada de una colina salpicada de tétricas chabolas negras apoyadas en los tristes montículos de desperdicios y escoria de hulla. Una lluvia torrencial caía sesgada formando arroyos que producían espuma y se iban arrastrando a través del negro cieno hasta las vías del ferrocarril.

I glanced out of the window. Coketown was nothing more than a ragged hillside dotted with a score of black dismal huts propped up against dreary mounds of slag and clinkers. It rained in slanting torrents, too, and the rills foamed and splashed down through the black mud to the railroad-tracks.

-No creo que vayas a vender mucho vidrio aquí, John -le dije-. ¿Por qué te bajas en este confín del mundo?

"You won't sell much plate-glass here, John," said I. "Why do you get off at this end-o'-the-world?"

-Porque -contestó Pescud- el otro día me llevé a Jessie a un viajecito a Filadelfia, y al volver vio en el tiesto de una de esas ventanas de ahí unas petunias exactamente iguales a las que ella solía cultivar en su vieja mansión de Virginia. Así que pensé venir aquí por la noche y tratar de desenterrar unas cuantas raíces o brotes para ella. Ya hemos llegado. Buenas noches, muchacho. Te dejo mis señas. Ven a vernos cuando tengas tiempo.

"Why," said Pescud, "the other day I took Jessie for a little trip to Philadelphia, and coming back she thought she saw some petunias in a pot in one of those windows over there just like some she used to raise down in the old Virginia home. So I thought I'd drop off here for the night, and see if I could dig up some of the cuttings or blossoms for her. Here we are. Good-night, old man. I gave you the address. Come out and see us when you have time."

El tren empezó a andar de nuevo. Una de las señoras de marrón y velo insistió en dejar las ventanas levantadas precisamente cuando la lluvia las azotaba con furia. Apareció el revisor con su varita misteriosa y empezó a encender las luces del vagón.

The train moved forward. One of the dotted brown ladies insisted on having windows raised, now that the rain beat against them. The porter came along with his mysterious wand and began to light the car.

Miré al suelo y vi el best-seller. Lo recogí y lo coloqué cuidadosamente en un lugar más alejado sobre el piso del vagón, donde la lluvia no pudiese alcanzarlo. Y entonces, de repente, sonreí, y me pareció comprender que la vida no tiene metas ni límites geográficos.

I glanced downward and saw the best-seller. I picked it up and set it carefully farther along on the floor of the car, where the rain-drops would not fall upon it. And then, suddenly, I smiled, and seemed to see that life has no geographical metes and bounds.

«Buena suerte, Trevelyan -dije para mis adentros- ¡Y que consigas las petunias para tu princesa!»

"Good-luck to you, Trevelyan," I said. "And may you get the petunias for your princess!"
